Vary this Caramel Apple Recipe to Make a Special Treat

Caramel Apple Recipe

makes 6

6 green (Granny Smith) apples

6 wooden sticks

1 package (14 oz.) individually wrapped caramels, unwrapped

2 tablespoons water

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Insert wooden sticks into the stem end of each apple. Place apples on a cookie sheet covered with lightly greased aluminum foil. Combine caramels and water in a saucepan over low heat. Cook, stirring often, until caramel melts and is smooth. Stir in vanilla extract. Dip each apple into the caramel and let excess run off. Scrape excess caramel from the apple bottoms using the side of the saucepan. Place on the aluminum foil. May sprinkle with chopped nuts, mini chocolate chips, chopped cookies, dried cranberries, raisins, or cherries. Chill apples to allow caramel to set. May also drizzle melted chocolate (1 c. white, dark, or milk chocolate chips) over, or for another variation, add 1-2 T. brandy or whiskey to the melted caramel before dipping apples.

You can wrap these apples in cellophane to give as gifts or use as Halloween party favors.
